Health Stores UK member Sheaf Street Health Store has launched a scheme to enable recycling of blister packs, describing it as a “win-win for the planet”.
“Our business is all about being kind to the environment, and providing a recycling option for this type of packaging is a natural next step,” explains store manager, Tammy Hill. “On the first day, a customer came in with a large black binbag full of empty medicinal blister packs as she didn’t want them to end up in landfill.”
Blister pack packaging is made from both metal and plastic, making it unsuitable for doorstep recycling collections.
“THIS INITIATIVE IS BRINGING NEW PEOPLE INTO OUR STORE AND IT’S A WIN-WIN FOR THE PLANET”
Sheaf Street Health Store, sends the packaging to a Hull-based firm called Myrefactory, where it is made into items such as planters and playground furniture.
The in-store recycling box accepts medicinal blister packs, plastic pill bottles, plastic vials and plastic vitamin bottles, but the store asks that all packaging is empty and clean before being placed in the recycling box.
“This initiative is bringing new people into our store and it’s a win-win for the planet as not only does the packaging get saved from landfill and recycled, a tree is planted for every box we fill and recycle!” says Tammy
